Our School Library

 wandsworth special school

Our library was remodelled in recent years to bring it up to date and extend the facilities.

The library not only contains a comprehensive catalogue of books, but also DVDs,  audio books, objects of reference for story-telling and puppet bank. There is an interactive whiteboard for use in Interactive story-telling.

An invaluable resource available in the library are the interactive story bags. These are stories that are adapted for use in the school, containing specific props that have been bought or made as an integral part of the story.

Another addition to the resources available are the puppet theatres which now have dual use as black boxes, these black boxes can be used for interactive story-telling, i.e. Funny bones.

Since opening the library has been an invaluable facility, the children & young people enjoy the calm and restful area and treat the room with great care and respect, needing little reinforcement from staff.

Lower school classes have an interactive story-telling session that takes place in the library; this usually takes the form of using puppets and objects of reference and using a specially produced Power Point presentation to illustrate the story on the Interactive whiteboard.

The benefit of using this format is that the children & young people can come to the board and press a picture or photo and the relevant sound will be forthcoming.  Stories are not only fictional but can also link with Festivals, celebrations, curriculum themes and reinforcement activities for special events, for example the children & young people learnt the stories  for Midsummer Night’s Dream and Beowulf before the school drama productions.

The children & young people are free to choose their own books, tapes etc. which can be booked out to their classes or teams.
