Work Related Learning & Community Activities

Library29032016.jpgChildren & young people within the upper school focus on work related learning with a view to work experience opportunities off-site.

Throughout the school week classes in Key Stage 4 access horticulture, wooodwork and craft sessions.  Children & young people are also actively engaged in cooking and domestic tasks such as cleaning away after lunch and doing the laundry.  This also continues throughout the 24hr curriculum in which children & young people take part in a range of routine activities such as making breakfast and a variety of domestic tasks.

In Key Stage 5 children & young people have more time allocated to work related learning in their weekly timetable and some children & young people begin to enter work experience opportunities based on their giftings, motivations and interests.

Examples have included:

  • work at a golf course
  • a pet rescue centre
  • a bike shop
  • a children's centre
  • Sainsbury's
  • a cafe
  • local community horticulture projects

There have also been group opportunities for children & young people to gain experience in the work place through horticulture placements including Mockett's Wood and a local park area.  Some children & young people also attend The Garden Gate (a local community garden).

As well as a focus on work related learning and work experience opportunities children & young people are engaged in an increasing number of community based activities to facilitate inclusion.  All children & young people have regular shopping and cafe experiences throughout the school week as part of their timetable; as well as regular opportunities for walks and educational trips.

Children & young people also access a variety of sessions in the community including:

  • Tai Chi at a local education centre
  • Swimming
  • Gym session at a local leisure centre
  • East Kent College
  • Swimming at local leisure centres
