Friendships & Fallouts: Waterloo - WW1

Bradstow School has funding from Heritage Lottery Fund to run a 3 year project to commemorate Waterloo and WW1.Lottery-logo.jpg

June 20th 2015 is the 200th anniversary of the Waterloo dispatch being landed at Broadstairs beach and 2014-2018 will be the 100th anniversary of WW1.

Led by the school, with help from specialist facilitators and volunteers, the project will focus on hands on, active learning based on life and war during 1814-1918, Waterloo-WW1, with particular attention being paid to local significance.

The project is linked with the Bradstow School’s inclusion agenda, enabling children & young people who have special needs to work side by side main stream children & young people and other groups in the community.

This project will not only give Bradstow School children & young people the opportunity to learn about local life during wartime, but many others locally too.

We will endeavour to help our young people and other young people in the community to understand the impact and significance of the events locally.

This page will be updated regularly with information and links to photos and resources and news gathered throughout the life of the project.

If you would like any further information regarding this project please email Lorraine Hiller (Inclusion Development Manager):

Bradstow School is very lucky to be sponsored to design a sculpture and 2 attached benches by Caudwell Children’s Charity.

Click here to view Caudwell Art Gallery showing artwork completed by Bradstow School children & young people.

The items will be sculpted by Bruks Tree Carving and will be located in the local community. This project will link with the commemoration of WW1 and will be designed with this project in mind.

Bradstow School Remembrance Mosaic

A mosaic has been designed and made by Martin Cheek that will be used at Broadstairs war memorial each year, this is very special as it is designed with simple poppies with a name attached, there are 20 in total and they are the names of 20 fallen soldiers from WW1 whose names were not put onto the war memorial. This was presented to the town for Remembrance Day on 9th November 2014 Sarah Dunn laid a special commemorative wreath to those fallen in WW1.

Bradstow students will be making similar poppies for a remembrance wall at school and will also be making a plaque to show who donated the mosaic to the town.
